What is an NIE number? 

NIE number stands for “Número de Identidad de Extranjero“. It is an Identification number that allows foreigners living and Spain to legally engage in fiscal activities within the country. 

Why do Americans moving to Spain need an NIE number? 

There are several reasons why Americans moving to Spain need an NIE number. Firstly, it serves as an identification number for tax purposes, allowing American residents in Spain to fulfill their tax obligations in Spain. . 

Other examples, of when you will need an NIE include: 

  • buying or selling property or a car in Spain 
  • renting property 
  • studying in Spain 
  • opening a Spanish bank account 
  • setting up internet, phone, and utilities accounts 
  • obtaining a Spanish driving license

How to obtain an NIE number 

The simplest and safest way to obtain an NIE number is to grant a Spanish lawyer power of attorney to handle the process on your behalf.  

You must apply for your NIE within 90 days of moving to Spain. 

What documents are required to get an NIE number?  

In your NIE number appointment, you’ll need to bring along the following documents: 

  • Your passport as well as a copy of the biometric data page 
  • Two passport-sized photos 
  • A completed EX-15 application form 
  • A certificate of residence, obtainable from the municipality where you live in Spain 
  • Form 790 code 12 completed, along with payment of the corresponding fee. 

How much does an NIE cost? 

As of 2024, the cost of applying for an NIE number for the first time is €10.71. It’s important to note that fees may vary depending on the location and method of application, and the fee rises a little each year.  

How long are NIE numbers valid for? 

NIE number certificates no longer expire, and so remain valid indefinitely without the need for renewal. 

While the NIE number itself remains valid indefinitely, associated documents or permits, such as the associated TIE (foreigner ID card or “tarjeta de identidad de extranjero”) must be renewed when necessary. Thus, it’s important to monitor the expiration dates of any related documents and residency visas to ensure compliance with Spanish immigration laws and regulations to avoid any issues.
