The Impact of Trump’s Tariffs For US Expat Investors in the EU

by | Apr 14, 2025 | Investing

At the beginning of the month, President Trump announced tariffs on countries around the world, including a 20% tariff on imports from the EU. The impact of these tariffs has led to market volatility, as countries affected consider their responses and markets grapple to pre-empt them. This in turn highlights the need for portfolio diversification, in terms of asset classes and also currencies and regions, to help balance the impact of unavoidable political and economic turbulence on investments.

At EAFA, we wanted to take the opportunity to announce that we’re launching a Euro-Denominated Portfolio built for Americans in Europe.

In recent months, we’ve heard a clear message from many of our clients and prospects across Europe: “How can I diversify away from the US markets, protect myself from currency swings, and invest where I live, all while staying compliant with both US and EU rules?”

Between ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, market volatility, and the long-term weakness of the US dollar relative to the euro, we understand why many Americans living in Europe are looking for greater stability and alignment in their portfolios.

That’s why EuroAmerican Financial Advisors is excited to introduce a new, euro-denominated portfolio of European equities specifically designed for US expats living in the EU.

Here’s what makes this unique:

Euro-Denominated Assets, Held in the EU – Your investments are aligned with your cost of living, insulated from USD-EUR fluctuations, and held locally with a regulated EU custodian

Exposure to European Growth & Value Stocks – A balanced allocation of high-quality companies across Europe gives you geographic diversification and new long-term opportunities.

Tax-Efficient & US-Compliant – We structure the portfolio to meet both US tax obligations (FATCA, PFIC, etc.) and local European rules, minimizing complexity while staying fully above board.

Built for expat life

This portfolio was designed specifically for Americans who have made Europe their home offering strategic flexibility for your global lifestyle.

This is a unique solution for US expats seeking clarity, compliance, and control in an increasingly unpredictable financial landscape.

If you’re interested in learning more or seeing how it might fit into your broader financial plan, and investment portfolio, we’d be happy to walk you through it.
